Bonding and Grounding (Earthing)
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Grounding | is the establishment of a reference for the electrical power source, the electrical equipment, or both. |
| Bonding | is the connection intended to equalize safely and effectively the potential differences between two metallic items. |
| What is the purpose of the ac grounding electrode system? | -Establish a zero-volt reference for ac electrical power systems -Provide a path for the dissipation of currents due to lightning or accidental contact higher voltage systems. -Provide a path for the dissipation of electrostatic discharge currents. |
| Grounding electrode conductor (GEC) | The conductor used to connect the grounding electrode to either the equipment grounding conductor, or to the grounded conductor of the circuit at the service equipment, or at the source of a separately derived system. |
| Grounding Electrode | A conductor, usually a rod, pipe, or a plate (or group of conductors), in direct contact with the earth for the purpose of providing a low-impedance connection to the earth. |
| 3 purposes of the equipment grounding system | -It maintains zero volts on all equipment enclosures during normal operations -It acts as the intentional path for fault current underground fault conditions. -Properly installed, it provides a zero voltage reference for end-use equipment power supplies |
| The equipment grounding system provides a reference... | -For the logic (chassis) ground within the equipment, which benefits the steady-state (timing) operation of electronic devices. -To establish a voltage basis for bit pulses. |
| Telecommunications Main Grounding Busbar (TMGB) | serves as the dedicated extension of the building ac grounding electrode system for the telecommunications infrastructure. |
| What are the minimum dimensions of a TMGB? | 0.25. thick by 4 in. wide and be variable in length |
| Bonding conductor for telecommunications (BCT) | is intended to bond the TMGB to the ac grounding electrode system via the ac main service entrance panel board. Must be made within 30 ft (9m), otherwise the impedance of this conductor will limit it effectiveness, due to its length. |
| Telecommunications grounding busbar (TGB) | is the grounding connection point for telecommunications systems and equipment in the area served by an ER or TR. |
| What are the minimum dimensions of a TGB? | 0.25 in. thick by 2 in. wide and be variable in length |
| Telecommunications Bonding Backbone (TBB) | is a bonding conductor intended to equalize potentials between TRs on multiple floors of a building with an ultimate connection to the EFs TMGB. |
| What are the typical bonding connections that are made? | Exothermic welding, listed lugs, listed pressure connectors, or listed clamps |
| Exothermic welding | a seamless molecular bond of metals |
| What is exposure? | refers to an outdoor telecommunications cable's susceptibility to electrical power system vaults or to lightning or other transients |
