| opposites | The integer on the opposite side of zero from a given number, but at the same distance from zero. |
| absolute value | The distance that an integer is from zero on the number line. |
| integers | The counting numbers, their opposites, and zero. |
| rational number | Any number that can be written as a quotient a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not 0. |
| coordinate plane | A two-dimensional system in which a location is described by its distances from two perpendicular number lines called the x-axis and the y-axis. |
| x-axis | The horizontal line on a coordinate plane. |
| y-axis | The vertical line on a coordinate plane. |
| quadrants | One of the four regions into which the x- and y- axes divide the coordinate plane. THe axes are not parts of the quadrant. |
| ordered pair | A pair of numbers (x, y) used to locate a point on a coordinate plane. |
| origin | The point (0,0) where the x-and y-axes of a coordinate plane intersect. |
| horizontal | A straight line on the coordinate plane where all points on the line have the same y-coordinate. |
| vertical | A straight line on the coordinate plane where all points on the line have the same x-coordinate. |
