| arrow keys | the keys on computer keyboard used to move the cursor up, down, left, or right on your screen |
| button bar | a horizontal strip of buttons near the top of a window. It provides shortcuts for commonly used commands; also known as a toolbar |
| buttons | small clickable boxes that help you to accomplish a task; most buttons contain small pictures (icons) that display what they do (i.e. a printer icon to print) |
| click | to briefly tap the mouse button |
| convert | to change a file from one file type to another |
| computer system | a system of one or more computers and associated software with common storage |
| computing | the use or operation of computers |
| communication | the means of sending or receiving information |
| computer theory | the science of how computers work |
| copy | to duplicate a block of text or a graphic and place it in the “clipboard” area of memory |
| cursor | an on-screen marker that shows where keystrokes will appear |
| cut | to remove text or graphics from a document and place it on the clipboard |
| collaborate | to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor |
| copyright law | the law that protects the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something |
| control key (CTRL) | a key used to access commands through the keyboard rather than the menus; CTRL commands are commonly shortcuts |
| control panel | a window you can open to adjust various aspects of your computer, such as the volume, fonts, desktop background, mouse speed, and clock |
| data | information stored in the computer as numbers, letters, and special symbols |
| digital information | information stored in binary format that a computer can understand |
| double-click mouse | to tap the mouse button twice in quick succession without moving the mouse |
| download | to copy a file from a remote computer “down” to your computer via a network or phone lines; contrast with upload |
| drag mouse | to move the pointer while the mouse button is held down |
| drawing tools | the tools used to create lines, circles, rectangles, etc. |
| desktop | the background on the windows, menus, and dialog boxes on a PC; it is supposed to represent a desk |
| delete | a key used to erase characters |
| digital | characterized by electronic and especially computerized technology |
