Figurative Language

Symbolism using one thing (a symbol) to stand for or represent something else
Idioms expression that means something other than the literal meanings of its individual words
Oxymoron figure of speech in which contradictory terms appear together (ground pilot, false true)
Allusion a reference to a person, place or event from literature, sports, history, movies or the arts
It was an obvious lie, I was surprised his nose didn't start growing. Allusion- refers to Pinochio he is a liar
On his first trip to Hawaii he was so amazed by its beauty he thought it must be the Garden of Eden. Allusion-refers to Adam & Eve's Garden of Eden, the Bible- a magical place
After going to the zoo, the mall, and the movies, Cassie was sick of bending over backward to entertain her nieces. Idiom- "bending over backwards"Cassie was trying very hard to entertain her nieces
Bobby would have been playing ball until the cows came home if it hadn't been for Suzie dragging him home for dinner. Idiom-"until the cows came home" Bobby would have continued playing ball for a long time
My younger brother took the larger half of the blueberry muffin. Oxymoron-larger half
The teacher asked the class to keep the noise down to a dull roar. Oxymoron- noise to a dull roar
