What were some laws colonists were expected to follow? Not having different beliefs, had to go to church, could not swear, or lie
What were some colonial jobs? Blacksmith, clothes making, silversmith, chandler (candle and soap maker), overseer, watch maker, printer
What form of government did the Southern colonies create? Governors and assemblies, made a constitution, or a written form of government
What was life like for slaves? Had to farm, hard labor on plantations for no pay, had to work all day, they were beaten or abused, they weren’t allowed to learn to read or write.
What was the geography and climate of the Southern Colonies? Mild, hot and humid
What was the economy of the Southern Colonies based on? Plantations with African slaves
What resources were available to Southern Colonies? Small farms that produced crops
What products and crops did the Southern Colonies produce? Tobacco, clothes, tools, and barrels of corn, rice , indigo, grain ships

How did the government of the Maryland Colony protect religious freedoms? In 1649, Maryland passed the Toleration Act, which gave religious freedom to all Christians in the colony.
What was the main cash crop in Virginia, Maryland, and northern North Carolina? Tobacco
How did the location of a farm in the Southern Colonies affect the kind of crops grown there? The type of soil determined which type of crops grew best there. Tobacco was better for coastal plain land in Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina. Rice for wet land in South Carolina.
How did plantations affect life in the Southern Colonies? The economy of the Southern Colonies depended mostly on the crops from large plantations.
How did most colonists in the Southern Colonies make their living? Most colonists lived and worked on small farms.
How did geography affect where people settled in the Southern Colonies? The backcountry had thick forests, hills, and few roads.
