Theseus and the Minotaur He volunteered to go to Crete to be sacrificed to the Minotaur, who he said he would kill. Used thread and a sword. Forgot to change his sails, got home and found out his dad killed himself because he had thought his son was dead
Orpheus and Eurydice About to get married, but a poisonous snake bit the woman which sent her to the Underworld. He got into Underworld with his music to get her. Hades agreed to return her. The guy did not follow Hades' rules and she was sent back, and he died of a broken<3
Pyramus and Thisbe Greek version of Romeo and Juliet.
Baucis and Philemon Elderly couple, not many materials, great love. Welcomed 2travelers into home(Jupiter and Mercury). J&M have been turned away 1K times. Bc of hospitality, J&M granted the couple their wish, to die at the same moment. Turned into two trees from same trunk.
Leda and the Swan Stories claiming Leda as Helen's mother tell how Zeus disguised himself as a swan and raped the Spartan queen. Leda then produced two eggs. Helen and brother Pollux, from one, and Clytemnestra and Castor from the other.
Europa and the Bull Taken by Zeusd(isguised as this) and brought her to Crete, gave birth to 3 sons. Married king of Crete.He died. Who should be king? Minos prayed to gods to send this to sacrifice. A white bull came from sea. Poseidon made wife<3 bull. Produced a minotar
Phaethon Son of the sun god, Apollo. Friends didn’t believe him. He wanted to ride Dad's chariot,only dad could control it. He tried, lost control, sun was getting closer to the earth & about to catch fire when Zeus struck him with lightning &he fell into river.
Daphne and Apollo Insulted the god of<3, Eros & said his bow should be used violently. Eros shot a wood nymph with an arrow to make her hate him& shot him to make him<3her. She raced her suitors to decide who she would marry. He would win, her dad turned her into a tree.
Prometheus Titan god of forethought and crafty counsel who was entrusted with the task of molding mankind out of clay. Tricked gods. Arrested&bound to a stake on Mount Kaukasos.An eagle was set to eat his regenerating liver. Herakles released the Titan from torture.
Endymion The moon (Selene) fell in love with him. She bore him 50 daughters. Then, she placed him into eternal sleep to keep him young and beautiful forever.
Pygmalion and Galatea He lived on Cyprus as a sculptor. He loved his sculpture very much and acted as if it was a real person. He prayed to Aphrodite to make it in a real human being, and she did. The sculpture came to life, and they had a child together.
Echo and Narcissus A mountain nymph that annoyed Hera. She distracted Hera from finding out of Zeus’s affairs. Hera took away her voice& she could only repeat the last word spoken by someone else. She was in <3 with someone. Rejected her bc she could only repeat his words.
Cupid and Psyche Aphrodite got mad at her beauty and sent this guy to make her fall in<3 w/an ugly, mean, creature. He fell in <3 w/ her. He came, made love to her and told her he was her husband, but she was to never look at him. She did, he got mad, &left.
Hero and Leander Lovers. Secret BC she was a priestess of Aphrodite¬ allowed to marry or have sex.She was leave a lamp lit in her bedroom and he would swim to her. Wind blew out lamp and he drowned. She found his dead body and jumped from her room committing suicide.
Sisyphus Known for cleverness during life and the punishment he suffered after death.He betrayed Zeus when he revealed the location to the nymph's father in exchange for a spring of pure water. Punishment: boulder up the hill forever
Midas King Midas is a fable about a king who is granted the power to turn everything he touches into gold. He cannot eat or drink BC everything he touches turns to gold. one day his daughter comes running to him and he hugs her, she too then turns to gold.
Persephone and Hades He wanted to marry her, so he snatched her from the real world. This upset her mother, Demeter,& cause crops not to grow &famine to strike. Zeus had to make a deal with him to let her come out of the underworld during spring and summer. (Growing season)
Achilles When he was born, his mother, in an effort to make him immortal, took him to the Styx river and dipped him. She held him by one heel. The area where she held him remained dry. Heel was not touched by the water, it was the one vulnerable place on him.
Adonis A very handsome baby, Aphrodite fell in <3 with him&put him in a box and sent him down to the underworld. Persephone fell in <3 with the baby&didn’t want to give him back. Zeus let them both keep him,(A on earth, P in underworld) killed by a boar with A.
Ares/Mars Olympian god of war, anything manly& heroic&brave is associated with him.Slayed Adonis for the love of Aphrodite, guised as a boar. He turned a couple from Thebes into serpents. His daughter was raped which he retaliated in the murder of the rapist.
Atlas Name=trait of endurance. Rebelled against Zeus,lost,&had to bear the world on shoulders. Instructed man in astronomy-really helped out farmers&sailors. Constellation of him kneeling. Died by being turned into a mountain by gorgon’s head.
Bacchus/Dionysus He is the God of fertility, wine and ecstasy. So, often he is associated with crops, farming and harvest. Also, associated with sex, drunkenness, and madness. Result of an affair, Hera wanted to kill his mom, before she did, Zeus put him in his thigh.
Cassandra Daughter of Priam and Hecuba. Most beautiful of Priam's daughters, Apollo fell in<3 with her. promised the gift of prophecy if she would agree to be his. She accepted, but refused his advances. Made him mad, he cursed her. Fam thought she was crazy.
Circe Glaucus was changed into a sea god one day, he became half man and half fish. He fell in love with Scylla, asked this woman for help making Scylla love him, she offered her love, he refused, she got jealous and turned Scylla into a monster
Fauns A type of creature who has horns and resembles goats below the waist, humans above. It loves to dance and play the flute.
Golden Fleece When Jason & the Argonauts traveled to Colchis, where this was, the king refused to give it to them. He gave them 3tasks. Meada, his daughter fell in <3with Jason and helped him with these tasks. Medea helped steal this by putting the serpent to sleep.
Hades Ruler of the Underworld. Owns the helmet of invisibility (lends it to Perseus, etc.) Abducts Persephone (divides her time between the upper and underworld)
Nemesis Minor goddess, goddess of revenge, provides retribution to those who succumb to hubris, In some metaphysical mythology, Nemesis produced the egg from which hatched two sets of twins: Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux.
Pandora's Box Inside the container were disease, old age, poverty, evil, war, & all the other ills that have plagued humans ever since. When the box was opened, they flew out into the world, leaving only Hope at the bottom of the box to give people a scrap of comfort.
Romulus and Remus Unwanted twins of the god Mars. He tried to kill them, but they survived. When they grew up, they wanted to find a city. One brother killed the other so he could name it after himself. To populate the city, he invited people for dinner&raped the wives
Titans Race of primordial, powerful deities that ruled during the legendary Golden Age.Created by Gaea and Uranus.They were the first dwelling in Mt. O, expelled to Tartarus, after their defeat in a huge battle with the Olympian Gods, known as Titanomachy.
Zephyr Son of Astraeus and Eos, goddess of the dawn and father of the spring flowers. The gentle wind of the west and the interceder between the World of the living and the Underworld, who brought the spring rains that were so valuable for awakening the nature.
Venus/Aphrodite Goddess of love and beauty. Married to Hephaestus (God of Iron), but she loved Ares.
