Exponential Equations and Functions

TermDefinition
Square Root If b² = a, then b is a square root of a. the radical sign √, represents a nonnegative square root
Radical Sign the symbol √ which is used to represent a square root
Radicand the number or expression under a radical sign
Square Root Equation an equation that contains a square root with a variable in the radicand
closed A set of numbers is closed under an operation when the operation performed on any two numbers in the set results in a number that is also in the set.
nth root when b to the n power equals a for an integer n greater than 1 b would be an nth root of a.
Exponential function a function of the form y=ab^x, where a doesn't equal 0, b doesn't equal 0, and b>0
Exponential growth When a quantity increases by the same factor over equal intervals of time
Exponential Growth function a function of the form y=(1 + r)^1, where a>0 and r>0
Compound Interest Interest earned on the principal and on previously earned interest
Exponential Decay When a quantity decreases by the same factor over equal intervals of time
Exponential Decay Function A function of the form y = a(1-r)⁺, where a > 0 and 0 < r < 1
