TermDefinition
Proper Noun The specific name of a person, place or thing, such as Jane
Collective Noun A noun, as herd, jury, or clergy, that appears singular in formal shape but denotes a group of persons or objects
Helping Verb An informal term for an auxiliary verb, which combines with a main verb to help it express tense, mood, and voice. Common helping verbs are be, do, have, can, may, will, shall
Gerund A verbal noun analogous to the Latin gerund, such as the English form ending in -ing when used as a noun, as in singing in We admired the choir's singing
Participle A form of a verb, that can function independently as an adjective. Example: We had some baked beans.
Infinitives A verb form that contains verbal characteristics, such as modification by adverbs, and that in English may be preceded by to, as in To go willingly is to show strength or We want him to work harder
First Person Point of View The narrator is a character in the action of the story
Third Person Point of View The narrator does not participate in the action of the story as one of the characters, but lets us know exactly how the characters feel
Omniscient Narrator A narrator who knows everything about all the characters is all knowing
Limited Omniscient Narrator A narrator whose knowledge is limited to one character, either major or minor
Blank Verse Verse or poetry that does not rhyme
Antagonist A character who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another
Protagonist The leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or other literary work
Censorship The act of removing literature from publication due to its content
