TermDefinition
Folklore The traditional beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of people, shared orally and later written down
Fantasy Fiction characterized by highly fanciful or supernatural elements
Comedy A dramatic work that is light and often humorous or satirical in tone and that usually contains a happy ending
Legend An unverified story handed down from earlier times, especially one popularly believed to be historical
Myth Traditional, typically ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that explains aspects of the natural world, customs, or ideals of society
Romance a. long medieval narrative in prose or verse that tells of the adventures and heroic exploits of chivalric heroes. b. An artistic work that deals with sexual love, especially in an idealized form
Satire A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit
Speech A piece of writing intended to be spoken
Tragedy A drama in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, a moral weakness, or an inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances
Monologue This is where the actor speaks out loud as if to himself or herself while alone on stage
Soliloquy This is where the actor speaks out loud with others on stage, but they cannot be heard
Tragic Flaw The character defect that causes the downfall of the protagonist of a tragedy
Subject The who or what a sentence is about
Predicate Modifies the subject and including the verb, objects, or phrases governed by the verb
Common Noun A noun that is not specific, such as man, city, horse, music
