| Term | Definition |

| Physical change | Any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does not change it into another substance |
| Chemical change | A change in mstter that produces one or more new substances |
| Reactant | Substance that undergo the chemical changes |
| Product | The new substances that form |
| Precipitate | A solid that firms from a liquids during a chemical reaction |
| Exothermic reaction | A reaction that releases energy |
| Endothermic reaction | A reaction that absorbs energy |
| Chemical equation | A way to show a chemical reaction, using symbols instead of words |
| Law of conservation of mass | The principle that the total amount of matter is neither created nor destroyed during any chemical or physical change |
| Open system | A system in which matter can enter from or escape to the surroundings |
| Closed system | A system in which no matter is allowed to enter or leave |
| Coefficient | A number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation |
| Synthesis | When two or more elements or compounds combine to make a more complex substance |
| Decomposition | A chemical reaction that breaks down compounds into simpler products |
| Replacement | When one element replaces another element Ina compound, or if two elements in different compounds trade places |
| Activation energy | The minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction |
| Concentration | The amount of a substance in a given volume |
| Catalyst | A material that increases the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy |
| Enzyme | The cells in your body contain thousands of biological catalysts |
| Inhibitor | A material used to decrease the rate of a chemical reation |
