Chapter 5 vocabulary

Physical change Any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does not change it into another substance
Chemical change A change in mstter that produces one or more new substances
Reactant Substance that undergo the chemical changes
Product The new substances that form
Precipitate A solid that firms from a liquids during a chemical reaction
Exothermic reaction A reaction that releases energy
Endothermic reaction A reaction that absorbs energy
Chemical equation A way to show a chemical reaction, using symbols instead of words
Law of conservation of mass The principle that the total amount of matter is neither created nor destroyed during any chemical or physical change
Open system A system in which matter can enter from or escape to the surroundings
Closed system A system in which no matter is allowed to enter or leave
Coefficient A number placed in front of a chemical formula in an equation
Synthesis When two or more elements or compounds combine to make a more complex substance
Decomposition A chemical reaction that breaks down compounds into simpler products
Replacement When one element replaces another element Ina compound, or if two elements in different compounds trade places
Activation energy The minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction
Concentration The amount of a substance in a given volume
Catalyst A material that increases the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy
Enzyme The cells in your body contain thousands of biological catalysts
Inhibitor A material used to decrease the rate of a chemical reation
