Beta particle | a fast-moving electron emitted by radioactive decay of substances. (The emission of beta particles was originally regarded as a ray.). B or B- |
Gamma ray | penetrating electromagnetic radiation of a kind arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. |
Half-Life | the time taken for the radioactivity of a specified isotope to fall to half its original value. |
Fission | is either a nuclear reaction or a radioactive decay process in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts (lighter nuclei). |
is the combining of nuclei to form a bigger and heavier nucleus. | |
background radiation | to the radiation originating from sources other than the sources being observed. |
theory of relativity | Physics. a theory, formulated essentially by Albert Einstein, that all motion must be defined relative to a frame of reference and that space and time are relative, rather than absolute concepts: it consists of two principal parts. |
strong force | Also called nuclear force. the short-range attractive force between baryons that holds together the nucleus of the atom. 2. Also called color force. the force between quarks. |
