Math Words

TermDefinition
Rational Number Any number that can be written as a fraction
Integer Any whole number and it's opposite
Oppsites Two numbers the same distance from zero in opposite directions from zero
Absolute Value The distance the number is from zero (ALWAYS POSITIVE)
Terminating Decimal A decimal that ends
Repeating Decimal A decimal that repeats Uses bar notation to write
Exponent An exponent is a small number written with another big number that tells how many times to multiply the big number by itself
Base The number that is going to be raised to a power.
Factor To factor a number means to break it up into numbers that can be multiplied together to get the original number.
Perfect Square A number made by squaring a whole number.
Order of Operations order of operations is the abbreviation "PEMDAS", which is turned into the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction".
Numerical Expressions numerical" means "involving numbers" and the term "expression" means "phrase". A numerical expression is a mathematical phrase involving only numbers and one or more operational symbols
Algebraic Expressions algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add, subtract, multiply, and divide)
Variable the dependent variable y represents the value of a function of x. To simplify formulas, it is often useful to use the same symbol for the dependent variable y and the function mapping x onto y.
Constant a constant is a number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number. If it is not a constant it is called a variable.
Coefficient a numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic expression
Term terms whose variables (and their exponents such as the 2 in x2) are the same.
Expression expression is a mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add, subtract, multiply, and divide)
Equation An equation says that two things are equal. So an equation is like a statement "this equals that"
Distributive Property Distributive Property is easy to remember, if you recall that "multiplication distributes over addition". Formally, they write this property as "a(b + c) = ab + ac".
Term A Term is either a single number or a variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.
Coefficent A Coefficient is a number used to multiply a variable
constant A term without a variable
Like terms "Like terms" are terms whose variables (and their exponents such as the 2 in x2) are the same

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
