Figurative Language

Simile | A comparison (same) of two unlike things using like or as. Ex. The clouds, up above, are like pink cotton candy. Ex. He is as fast as a race care. |
Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things not using like or as. Ex. The girl is a tree who reaches tall and high. |
Personification | When an author gives an animal or object human characteristics. Ex. The wind, like a ballerina, danced across the sky! |
Onomatapoeia | Words that create the sound they make. Ex. Boom! The book slammed to te floor. |
Hyperbole | Extreme exaggeration. Ex. I have been waiting in line for 100 years. - This is complete exaggeration. |
Alliteration | The repitition of consonant sounds. Ex. Billy bought a ball for his sister. |
Idiom | An expression that can't be taken literally. Ex. I have your back! You don't really have this person's back. It just means that means you will support them. |
Irony | When the opposite happens to what you expect or mean. Ex. The class is misbehaving, and the teacher says, "This is such a good class." This is the opposite of what they mean or you expect. |
Symbolism | An object or thing that conveys greater meaning. Ex. The flag symbolizes freedom. |
Imagery | The ability to form mental images of things or events. Ex. The soft, white snow silently covered the ground below. |
