Equation vocabulary

TermDefinition
coordinate plane A plane formed by two intersecting perpendicular number lines used to help locate the position of any point on a map or graph.
x axis The horizontal axis of a coordinate plane.
y axis The vertical axis of a coordinate plane.
quadrant I The upper right quadrant of a coordinate plane (+,+).
quadrant II The upper left quadrant of a coordinate plane (-,+).
quadrant III The lower left quadrant of a coordinate plane (-,-).
quadrant IV The lower right quadrant of a coordinate plane (+,-).
independent variable The input numbers of a function. The x values.
multiplicative inverse The number that when multiplied by a given number results in a product of one. It is also called the reciprocal.
coefficient The numerical factor of a term. The number in front of a variable.
identity An equation that is true for every value of the variable.
null set A set that contains nothing. It is also called the empty set.
equation A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal.
expression A mathematical combination of numbers, variables, and operations.
product The answer to a multiplication problem.
factor One of the numbers or variables being multiplied.
quotient The answer in a division problem.
variable The unknown number represented by a letter of the alphabet.
properties. A statement that is true all of the time.
one step equations An equation containing only one operation.
two step equations An equation containing two operations.
multi-step equations An equation containing many operations.
reciprocal A fraction that has been turned upside down,. It is also called the multiplicative inverse.
