Equation vocabulary

| coordinate plane | A plane formed by two intersecting perpendicular number lines used to help locate the position of any point on a map or graph. |
| x axis | The horizontal axis of a coordinate plane. |
| y axis | The vertical axis of a coordinate plane. |
| quadrant I | The upper right quadrant of a coordinate plane (+,+). |
| quadrant II | The upper left quadrant of a coordinate plane (-,+). |
| quadrant III | The lower left quadrant of a coordinate plane (-,-). |
| quadrant IV | The lower right quadrant of a coordinate plane (+,-). |
| independent variable | The input numbers of a function. The x values. |
| multiplicative inverse | The number that when multiplied by a given number results in a product of one. It is also called the reciprocal. |
| coefficient | The numerical factor of a term. The number in front of a variable. |
| identity | An equation that is true for every value of the variable. |
| null set | A set that contains nothing. It is also called the empty set. |
| equation | A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal. |
| expression | A mathematical combination of numbers, variables, and operations. |
| product | The answer to a multiplication problem. |
| factor | One of the numbers or variables being multiplied. |
| quotient | The answer in a division problem. |
| variable | The unknown number represented by a letter of the alphabet. |
| properties. | A statement that is true all of the time. |
| one step equations | An equation containing only one operation. |
| two step equations | An equation containing two operations. |
| multi-step equations | An equation containing many operations. |
| reciprocal | A fraction that has been turned upside down,. It is also called the multiplicative inverse. |
