Mixtures, solutions and elements!

QuestionAnswer
How is matter classified according to makeup? mixtures, solutions, elements, or components
Why is it more useful to classify matter according to makeup rather than according to phase? By makeup is more specific, precise and less confusing than by phase
What is matter that consists or 2 or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined called? A mixture
Why is granite considered a mixture? It is made up of different minerals that are not chemically combined, they keep thier separate identity and visibility in the rock.
Black sand, a Big Mac and a nebula far from Earth are all? mixtures
What type of mixture does not appear to be same throughout (such as a taco)? a heterogeneous mixture=least mixed
A snow globe, pebbles or sand in water are examples of what type of mixture? A liquid-solid mixture
Oil and vinegar is an example of what type of mixture? A liquid-liquid mixture
What type of mixture appears to be the same throughout? a homogeneous mixture-the particles are small and not easily recognizable
Milk, stainless steel, whipped cream, toothpaste and suntan lotion are a few examples of? homogeneous mixtures or COLLOIDS
What 2 properties are characteristic of colloids? 1. They will not separate upon standing (mayonnaise)because the particles are constantly bombarded and don't have a chance to settle out. 2. they often appear cloudy because of the bombardment (fog, milk)
Name 6 types of colloids with examples? Fog (liquid in gas)=clouds, smoke (solid in gas)=smoke, foam (gas in liquid)=whipped cream, emulsion (liquid in liquid)=mayonnaise, sol (solid in liquid)=paint, gel (liquid in solid)=butter
A type of homogeneous mixture that is formed when one substance dissolves in another is called a? solution
What are the 2 parts of a solution? 1. the substance that is dissolved (the solute) and 2. a substance that does the dissolving (the solvent)
What solvent can dissolve many substances and what is it called? water is called the universal solvent
Name a gas-gas solution air
Name a gas-liquid solution soda water, soda
Name a gas-solid solution charcoal gas mask
Name a liquid-liquid solution antifreeze
Name a liquid-solid solution dental filling (mercury in silver)
Name a solid-liquid ocean water (salt in water)
Name a solid-solid gold jewelry (copper in gold)
What is a substance that dissolves in water called and name 2 examples? soluble: salt and sugare
What is a substance that do not dissolve in water and give 2 examples? insoluble: mercury and oil
The amount of a solute that can be completely dissolved in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature is called its? solubility
Metal solutions are examples of solid solutions dissolved in solids and are called? alloys
Name 3 examples of alloys? gold jewelry, brass, sterling silver, stainless steel, pewter, bronze, solder
What are two properties of a solution? 1. its particles are too small to be seen and can't be easily separated 2. its particles are evenly spread out (lemonade is an example)
