2. Name the 4 countries that claimed parts of the Oregon country. Great Britain, Russia, Spain and the United States.
3. How did the fur trade in Oregon aid Americans who began settling there? The fur trade was the first way that American companies began to get involved in Oregon which then encouraged more settlement. More settlements meant safer settlements.
4. How did Manifest Destiny help Americans justify their desire to extend the U.S. to the Pacfic Ocean? The justification is that American's chose to believe O'Sulloivan when he said Providence/God had actually given the whole contenent to the American's.
5. For the cause the fur trade developes The effect was it caused the Oregon area to develop into a major trading place for the furs and brought in more companies and settlers who wanted a part in the fur trading action.
6. Do you think the painting on p. 356 provides a realistic portrayal of the journey west? Yes because it shows the weather and how they traveled. NO because you don't get a real idea of the swollen rivers they had to cross, or the high mountains, or the rough land they had to cross.
P.361 1. What are the approximate coordinates of Fort Victoria? The codinantes would be 48 degrees N and 124 degrees W
P. 361 2. At what line of latitude was the Oregon country divided between the U.S. and Britain? 49 degrees North
P. 361 3. What geographic feature lies at about 42 degrees N and 115 degrees W? Great Salt Lake
