| Antithesis | rhetorical device in which two opposite ideas are put together in a sentence to achieve a contrasting effect |
| Assonance | repetition of vowel sounds to create internal rhyming within phrases or sentences |
| Atmosphere | the emotional feelings inspired by a work |
| Characterization | he concept of creating characters for a narrative |
| Cliche | expression that has been overused to the extent that it loses its original meaning |
| Comic Relief | relief from tension caused by the introduction or occurrence of an amusing element |
| Dissonance | A disruption of harmonic sounds or rhythms |
| Dynamic Character | someone who undergoes an important, internal change because of the action in the plot |
| Euphemism | polite, indirect expressions which replace words and phrases considered harsh and impolite |
| Extended Metaphor | a comparison between two unlike subjects, throughout a long passage |
| Falling Action | the part of a literary plot that occurs after the climax has been reached and the conflict has been resolved |
| Frame Story | literary technique that sometimes serves as a companion piece to a passage within a passage |
| Hyperbole | exaggeration to create emphasis or effect |
| Imagery | an author's use of vivid and descriptive language to add depth to his or her work |
| Irony | a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words |
| Juxtaposition | arrangement of two or more ideas for the purpose of comparison and contrast |
| Limited Omniscient | a narrator that only has knowledge of one character |
| Metaphor | comparison of one thing to another without the use of like or as |
| Onomatopoeia | the naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it |
| Oxymoron | a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect |
| Paradox | a statement that appears to be self-contradictory or silly but may include a latent truth |
| Personification | a figure of speech in which a thing, an idea or an animal is given human attributes |
| Pun | a form of word play that suggests two or more meanings |
| Repetition | the simple repeating of a word |
| Rhyme | a repetition of similar sounding words occurring at the end of lines in poems |
| Simile | a figure of speech that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things with help from "like" or "as" |
| Stock Character | a fictional character based on a common literary or social stereotype |
| Understatement | a figure of speech employed by writers or speakers to intentionally make a situation seem less important than it really is |
