| Term | Definition |

| Internal Rhyme | rhyme that occurs within a single line of verse, or between internal phrases across multiple lines. By contrast, rhyme between line endings is known as end rhyme. |
| Situational Irony | irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected. |
| Allegory | a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms; figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another. |
| Alliteration | the commencement of two or more words of a word group with the same letter |
| Allusion | a metaphor; parable. |
| Synecdoche | a figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole or the whole for a part, the special for the general or the general for the specia |
| Analogy | a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based |
| Antagonist | a person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another; opponent; adversary. |
| Anti-hero | a protagonist who lacks the attributes that make a heroic figure, as nobility of mind and spirit, a life or attitude marked by action or purpose, and the like. |
| Anthropomorphism | an anthropomorphic conception or representation, as of a deity. |
