albumin Protein in blood maintains the proper amount of water int he blood
anitbody (Ab) Specific protein produced by lymphocytes in response to bacteria, viruses, or other antigens.
anitgen substance that stimulates the production of an anitbody
basophil white blood cell containig granules taht stain blue; associated with the release of histamine and heparin
eosinophil white blood cell that contains granules that stain red; associated with allergic reaction
erthrocyte red blood cell
erthropoietin (EPO) hormone secreted by the kidneys stimulates red blood cell formation
fibrin protein that forms the basis of a blood clot
fibrinogen plasma protein that is converted to fibrin in the clotting process
hemoglobin blood protein containing iron; carries oxygen in red blood cells
hmeolysis destruction or breakdown of red blood cells
immune reaction response of the immune system to foreign invasion
immunoglobulin Protein with antibody activity; examples are IgG
leukocyte white blood cells
lymphocyte mononuclear leukocyte that produces antibodies
macrophage monocyte that migrates from the blood to tissue spaces. macrophages distroy work out red blood cells in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow
megakaryocyte large platelet precursor cell found in the bone marrow
moncyte leukocyte with one large mucleus.
neutrophil granulocytic leukocyt formed in bone marrow
plasma liquid portion of blood; contains water, proteins, salts, nutrients, lipids, hormones, and vitamins
platelets small blood fragments that collect at sites of inhury to begin the clotting process
serum plasma minus clotting proteins and cells. clear, yellowish fluid that spereates from blood when it is allowed to clot.
thrombin Enzyme taht converts fibrinogen to fibrin during coagulation
