| decodable books | books that use words that reflect the phonics and word patterns she already learned |
| diagnostic assessments | assessments that tell us specifically how a student is performing and what else he or she needs to know |
| norm-based assessments | assessments that help us to determine how the student's performance compares with that of others students of the same age or grade |
| curriculum-based measurement (CBM) | a means of measuring students' progress and highlights the close tie between curriculum and student performance |
| informal reading inventories | a tool for monitoring ongoing student progress and for diagnosing individual instructional needs |
| independent reading level | students reading on their own without support from others |
| instructional reading level | the level at which instruction should occur |
| frustration reading level | material is too difficult for students to read with understanding even with assisstance |
| phonological awareness | knowing and demonstrating that spoken language can be broken into smaller units |
