Term | Definition |
---|---|
ratio | A comparison of two quantities using division. The ratio of a to b (where b does not equal 0) can be written as a to b, a : b, or a/b. |
rate | a ratio of two quantities with different units. |
unit rate | A rate with a denominator of 1. |
slope | A ratio of the change in y (the rise) to the change in x (the run) between any two points on a line. It is a measure of the steepness of a line. |
proportion | An equation stating that two ratios are equivalent. |
proportional | Two quantities that form a proportion. |
cross products | In the proportion a/b = c/d, where b and d do not equal 0, the products a(d) and b(c) are these. |
U.S. customary system | System of measurement that contains units for length, capacity, and weight. |
metric system | Decimal system of measurement, based on powers of 10, that contains units for length, capacity, and mass. |
direct variation | Two quantities x and y show direct variation when y = kx, where k is a number and k does not equal 0. |
inverse variation | Two quantities x and y show inverse variation when y = k/x, where k is a number and k does not equal 0. |
