What is the first step in subtracting fractions with unlike denominators? Find the LCD
What is the LCD of 3 and 5? 15
What do I do if the numerator in the first fraction is less than the numerator in the second fraction? I have to borrow from the whole number.
2 3/5 - 4/5 = 1 3/5
4 2/10 - 1 2/5 = 2 4/5
Step 1: Find the LCD
Step 2: Get new numerators
Step 3: Borrow one from the whole number
Step 4: Add the borrowed one to the fraction
Step 5: Subtract numerators
Step 6: Bring down the denominator
Step 7: Subtract whole numbers
Step 8: Simplify
