Special Functions

Functions, Linear Functions, Proportional Functions, Direct Variation

TermDefinition
Rate of Change change in y divided by change in x
Slope rise over run for the graph, coefficient of x in the equation
y-intercept starting point on the graph, the place the line crosses the y-axis, the constant of the equation
slope intercept form the equation of a line, y = mx + b
function a relation where each x value has exactly one y value x canNOT repeat the graph must pass the vertical line test
linear graph a straight line
linear table constant rate of change (delta y divided by delta x is the same for each row of the table)
linear equation the variable can only be raised to the first power the variable canNOT be in the denominator no radical signs around the variable
proportional graph straight line that goes through the origin
proportional table y divided by x must be the same for each row of the table
proportional equation has a constant of 0 (equation will not show the constant)
direct variation a special type of linear relationship that can be written in the form of y =kx (graph must be a straight line going through the origin, equation has a constant of 0, y divided by x is constant for each row in the table)
constant of proportionality y divided by x in a proportional relationship
constant of variation the "k" in a direct variation y divided by x

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
