Writing Genres

Defining the five genres of writing

TermDefinition
Informational Writing This kind of writing is used to give directions, sequence steps, compare one thing to another, explain cause and effects, or describe problems and solutions.
Narrative Writing This type of writing is used to retell familiar stories. The writing is often separated into three parts: beginning, middle, and end.
Personal Writing Examples of this type of writing include journals, blogs, and letters.
Persuasive Writing A type of writing that is clearly stating one position and supporting it with examples and evidence.
Poetry Writing A type of writing that uses rhyme.
