Chapter 18

Physical Science 9th grade

QuestionAnswer
Elements combine chemically to form these when the conditions are right. Compounds
This shows what elements a compound contains and the exact number of the atoms of each element in a unit of that compound. Chemical formula
Every element has one of these. It is usually one or two letters. Chemical symbol
Means written below Subscript
Uses the chemical symbol of an element surrounded by dots to represent the number of electrons in the outermost energy level. Lewis Dot Structure
The force that holds atoms together in a compound. Chemical bond
A charged particle that has either more or fewer electrons than protons. Ion
Means written above Superscript
When an atom loses electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion knows as this. Cation
When an atom gains electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion known as this. Anion
The force of attraction between the opposite charges of the ions in an ionic compound. Ionic bond
The attraction that forms between atoms when they share electrons. Covalent bond
The neutral particle that forms as a result of electron sharing. Molecule
This forms between nonmetallic elements and is composed of two shared electrons. Covalent bond
A covalent bond in which electrons are shared equally by both atoms. Nonpolar bond
Usually formed between metals and non metals. Ionic bond
These are unusually stable and seldom form compounds. Noble gases
Means "having opposite ends". Polar
Bond in which electrons are shared unequally resulting in a slightly positive end and a slightly negative end. Polar bond
One in which the unequal sharing of electrons results in a slightly positive end and a slightly negative end, although the overall molecule is neutral. Polar molecule
A molecule that does not have oppositely charged ends. Nonpolar molecule
A positive or negative number that indicates how many electrons an atom has gained, lost, or shared to become stable. Oxidation number
Compounds of two elements. Binary compound
"having many atoms" polyatomic
A positively or negatively charged, covalently bonded group of atoms. polyatomic ion
A compound that has water chemically attached to its atoms and written into its chemical formula. Hydrate

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
