DiR Section 1 Vocab

This "The Dark is Rising" vocabulary is for chapters 1-4, section 1.

QuestionAnswer
What does abroad mean? It means that you are outside. Example: The Walker is abroad.
What does ominous mean? It means dark and scary.
What does tinge mean? A little bit. Example: In the recipe, it says to put in a tinge of chocolate chips.
What is a tweed? A tweed is a kind of tighter sewn heavier clothing material.
What does thronging mean? It means grouping together. Example: The wolves started thronging together.
Who is a vicar? A priest in someway, a spiritual leader. Example: We had to follow what the vicar said.
What is mincemeat? A sweet filling with sugar, raisins, pecans, nuts, etc. Basically a filling used in pastries. Example: That mincemeat looked good for the pastries.
What is a crockery jar? A pottery jar. Example: "I want that crockery jar," Billy said.
What does voluptuous mean? A scent you smell and want to have. Example: Bob smelled the voluptuous smell coming from the pie.
What does auspiciously mean? It means that something's good to come. Example: "Your birthday will be soon," he said auspiciously.
What does tantalized mean? Wanted it. Example: Bob became tantalized with the smell of the baking cake.
What is contemplation? It means thinking. Example: He was contemplating the situation.
What does derisively mean? Annoyed. Example: He spat at him derisively.
What is being bemused mean? It means that you're so confused you don't know what you're confused about.
What does somber mean? It means being very sad. Example: He suddenly became sober when Bobby mentioned Mary's name.
What does erect mean? Nice, straight, tall. Example: The army soldiers stood erect.
What does creased mean? Folded. Example: Hillary creased the paper.
What does vainly mean? Uselessly. Example: He tossed vainly in bed.
What does being reverent mean? It means that you are being respectful. Example: All the students became reverent during the moment of silence.
What is a shod? A horse shoe. Example: The shod had the same mark as the ornament on Will's belt.
What does sobered mean? It means you became more serious. Example: He became sober after hearing the news.
