What is Setting? The time and place of the action of a story. It can shape, impact, or change mood
Why is the Setting important to the story? Tells you the surroundings and time period of the story and helps develop the plot
What is the Setting for "Searching for Summer"? Placed in England in August of the 80's
How would the story have been different in "Searching for Summer" if the setting was different? Some of the characters would never have been found and the sunlight would have never been found
What is Theme? The main idea of a work of literature. The writers ideas about life and human.
How is the theme important to the story? It is the point the author is trying to make and it is usually involved in the conflict.
What is the Theme in "There Will Come Soft Rains" Technology can be good or bad depending on who's hands it is in.
How is the Theme important to "There Will Come Soft Rains"? Shows that technology is good because of the house and it is bad because of the bomb that killed everyone.
What is Point of View? The perspective from which a writer tells a story. Two basic points of view are first and third person.
How does the Point of View affect the reader's understanding of the story? Affects the readers' understanding of the story because the third person tells everything that is happening and first person describes everything that they know and can't tell some information.
Why is the Point of View significant to "By the Waters of Babylon"? It is first person and he did not know until the end that NYC was destroyed.
How would the story "By the Waters of Babylon" have changed if the point of view was different? They would have known before the end that it was NYC.
What is conflict? The struggle between opposing forces that is the basis of plot in dramatic and narrative literature.
What is Internal Conflict? Conflict between a person and themselves.
What is External Conflict? Conflict between a person and another factor
What is the Conflict in "Epicac"? The first was that the narrator loved Pat but he was not romantic and the second that Epicac and the narrator both loved Pat.
What is Characterization? Refers to the techniques employed by writers to develop characters
