| the characteristics and traits of a character that the reader learns as they read | characterization |
| direct characterization | the author tells the reader the characters' traits |
| indirect characterization | the author shows the reader what the character is like without actually stating the traits |
| character traits | adjectives used to describe a character's personality |
| compare and contrast | to look for similarities and differences in something |
| motivation | forces that push or pull a person from the inside or outside to do things |
| allusion | a reference to something else (usually in literature or mythology) that the author expects the reader to recognize in order to make connections |
| main idea | central or most important point in a text, written as a sentence |
| context clues | using the words and sentences around a word to figure out its meaning |
| personification | making something seem like a person or having qualities of a person |
| narrator | the person telling the story |
| first person | a character in the story is telling the story from their perspective |
| third person omniscient | an outside narrator is telling the story and the reader can see all of the characters' thoughts and feelings |
