LD ELA 9th Gr "By the Waters of Babylon"

QuestionAnswer
What do you think the Great Burning might refer to? Refers to a large fire that destroyed a city. It seems to have been some type of destructive event that happened in the past.
Based on the first three paragraphs, can you determine what time period this story might be set in? It is in the primitive time period.
What are clues that tell you what the time period is? John decides to become a priest; gets a large piece of meat & the warm corner by the fire
Metal seems important to this society. List several things metal might be used for in a primitive society. Religious praise or used for tools.
What duties do you think the priests must perform for their people? Do you think the narrator really uses magic. Doctors; Not using actual magic but people thought they were using "magic". They were taught to read and write.
When tha narrator says "It is time for me to go on my journey", what does this suggest about the nature of the journey? Suggests that the person decides when it is time to go because there is a right and a wrong time.
What kind of leader is the narrator's father? The leader of all the priests in the civilization. Tough, but fair. More strict with John because he is going to be a priest.
What are the places in the text where John believes he's been given signs to Go East. He saw an eagle and three deer moving east. Has a vision (dream) which he sees a river and gods roaming.
Explain the effect of the simile "My heart was cold as a frog....." Means that he was getting very nervous about the crossing the river. Afraid he will die.
Explain the effect of the simile "and my knees like water...." Because he journey was a long and difficult one, he knees are weak. Difficult to walk forward because he is scared.
John has a great deal of trouble getting across the wide Ou-dis-Sun River in his small raft. Describe what he has to do to get across. Has to alternate paddling on both sides instead of paddling one side so that he does not go in circles. The current was strong & fast, had difficulty navigating the river. His raft flips and he has to paddle.
Explain the effect of the metaphor "I tried to think of my knowledge, but it was a squirrel's heap of winter nuts".... Trying to think of a way to get out of the situation, but he was not thinking clear. No knowledge to rely on but doesn't know what to do.
John believes the gods eventually showed him how to navigate across the river. What do you think really happened? How did he get across? He realized that he had to paddle on both sides of the raft.
The author has been slowing revealing that the Place of the Gods is actually a modern city. What are all the clues that were given that let the reader know that the Place of Gods is actually NYC> Finds off in jars, drinks, alcohol, windows, statues, subway system, lights, roads, paintings, carpet, books, oven sink faucets, lamps and fades marks and stains.
Nature has had time to work back into the city. John calls it a "fair island" How does this place look different how we see NYC today? There are destroyed buildings and roads with grass growing through the crack.
What other things would John see walking around NYC that he would not understand? See traffic lights, TV's, showers, graffiti, & roads
Where might these deadly packs of wild dogs and howling cats come from? Think about what might happen to all the animals people keep as pets if something happened to their owners? They may be the stray animals and not the domesticated animals because these are used to feed humans.
In your opinion, how many years after the Great Burning did John visit NYC? What clues are there? Fifty or more years because the marks and stains are faded
Now that you know more about what may have happened to John's ancestors, why do you think the metal objects may have been needed to be purified by a priest before the villagers could use them safely? Metal may have radiation on it that could potentially kill people.
Even after John has visited NY and seen the place of the gods for himself, he still clings to the idea that there is magic in the apartment. What kind of magic do you think he means here? Magic of electricity.
In the denouncement (resolution) of the story, what important lesson does John learn from his father? Rules change from generation to generation.
After reading the ending of the story, what similarities do the descendants of the great burning (John's people) share with the Jews from the Bible passage? Both migrated from different places and they created their religion.
