| couplet | A pair of lines of poetry that rhyme. |
| denotation | A word's exact meaning. |
| diverge | To separate, or go in different directions |
| effect | The result of something. |
| effective | Working very well and getting the job done. |
| figurative language | Language that is used in imaginative ways to express ideas that are not literally true. |
| genre | The category to which a literary work belongs. |
| hyperbole | A description exaggerated for emphasis. |
| metaphor | A comparison between two things in which one becomes the other. |
| narrative | Tells a story of a sequence of events. |
| paraphrase | To put in your own words. |
| personal narrative | Tells a story from a first-person view. |
| personification | To give objects ideas or human characteristics. |
| rhyme scheme | A consistent pattern of rhyming. |
| sensory details | Language that appeals to one or more of the senses. |
| simile | A comparison between two unlike things using "like" or "as." |
| stanza | A division of lines into groups in poetry. |
