| VARIABLE | Something that can have many values (usually represented by a letter to indicate that you have choices for its value). |
| a+b = b+a | commutative property |
| a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c | associative property |
| a(b + c) = a . b + a . c | distributive property |
| a + 0 = 0 + a = a | additive identity |
| a . 1 = 1 . a = a | multiplicative identity |
| ax + ay = a(x + y) | Greatest common factor |
| x^2 - a^2 = (x - a)(x + a) | Difference of two perfect squares |
| x^3 - a^3 = (x - a)(x^2 + ax + a^2) | Difference of two perfect cubes |
| x^3 + a^3 = (x + a)(x^2 - ax + a^2) | Sum of two perfect cubes |
