Literary Elements and Figurative Language

| Foreshadowing | A literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. |
| Imperative Mood | A verb form which makes a command or a request. |
| Imagery | Vivid descriptions that appeal to one or more of a reader's five senses. |
| Contextual Clues | Hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. |
| Alliteration | The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. |
| Allusion | A reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work. |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two unlike things without the use of the words "like" or "as" |
| Simile | Comparing two things using "like" or "as" |
| Repetition | Use of the same word or words more than once. It can be used to emphasize a particular idea and create suspense. |
| Memoir | A true story of a person's life that focuses on personal experiences and observations about people or events. |
| symbolism | the use of an object which stands for something other than itself. |
| prefix | An affix placed before a word, base, or another prefix to modify a term's meaning, as by making the term negative, as un- in unkind. |
