Lexicology Cards

TermDefinition
vocabulary the body of words used in a particular language
diachronic concerned with the way in which something, especially language, has developed and evolved through time
synchronic concerned with something, especially a language, as it exists at one point in time
word a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence
discourse written or spoken communication or debate
etymology the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history
lexicography the principles and practices of dictionary making
