| Chemical equation | Uses symbols to show the relationship between the reactants and the products. C+O2----> CO2 |
| Subscript | (H2O)- small number to the right of the element that shows how many atoms there are of the element |
| Coefficient | The large number that multiplies atoms of the element 2Cl+3Na |
| Reactant | A substance or molecule that starts a chemical reaction Mg+O2 ----> |
| Product | The substance that forms a result of a chemical reaction ----> MgO2 |
| Chemical Reaction | When atoms of elements break apart and rearrange to become new substances |
| Synthesis Reaction | When two or more substances combine to create one new compound |
| Decomposition Reaction | A reaction where a single compound breaks down to form 2 simpler substances |
| Single-Displacement Reaction | One element replaces another element in a compound leaving a new compound and 1 element |
| Double-Displacement Reaction | The 2 metal ions in 2 compounds switch places in a chemical reaction |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | States that mass is neither created or destroyed in a chemical reaction |
