Which books of the New Testament give us our understanding of the early Church? The Acts of the Apostles and the letters give us our understanding of the early Church.
What are some of the experiences of the early Church? Peter and John healed a man who was crippled. The Jewish leaders were angry because Peter, John, and all the apostles were healing and preaching in the name ofJesus. The apostles were arrested and jailed but were set free.
Why is Stephen called the first martyr? Stephen was one of the first seven deacons of the early Church, and he angered the Jewish leaders by enthusiastically preaching about Jesus. He is called a martyr because he sacrificed his own life in witness to Jesus Christ.
Epistle A letter written by St. Paul or another leader to a group of Christians in the early Church. Of the 27 books of the New Testament, 21 are epistles. The second reading at Mass on Sundays & holy days is always from one of these books.
Deacon Man ordained through Sacrament of Holy Orders to serve. Help bishops & priests, serving in charitable ministries of church. Also help proclaim the Gospel, preaching, & assisting at Liturgy of Eucharist. Also celebrate Baptisms, marriages, & funerals.
Martyrs those who have given their lives for the faith. Martyr comes from the Greek word for “witness.” A martyr is the supreme witness to the truth of the faith and to Christ to whom he or she is united.
