Why is our galaxy called the Milky Way? Because the light from its billions of stars look like a trail of spilled milk in the night sky
Why are the days longer than the nights at certain times of the year? Because the Earth's orbit, the tilt causes a region to face toward the sun for more hours than it faces away from the sun
When does the summer solstice occurs in the Northern Hemisphere? June 20th or 21st
Whys is it almost always hot in the area called the tropics? Because any low latitudes receives direct sunlight at some time during the year.
Axis The imaginary line running thru the Earth between the North and South poles
High Latitudes are called The polar zones near Arctic and Antartic
Middle latitudes Temperates zones that have different seasons throught out the year
Orbit The oval shaped path the Earth travels around the sun
Rotation The spinning motion of the Earth a top of its axis,about every 24 hours
Revolution Each year the Earth completes one orbit around the sun every 365 days
Low latitudes It is also the region between the Tropic of ______ and the Tropic of ____________ It is always hot in the tropics Cancer Capricorn
Plateau Is a large mostly flat area that rises above the surrounding land
Plain A flat area or an area with gently rolling land
Plate Tectonics The theory that the Earth's crust is made of huge slowly, moving slabs of rocks called plates
Hills A landform that is lower with a rounded top
Mountains A landform that is wide at the bottom and rises more than 2,000 feet above sea level
Landforms A shape or type of land, such as a mountain or hill
Plate The outer skin of the Earth called the crust, is broken into huge pieces
Weathering A process that breaks down rocks into pieces by wind, rain or ice
Erosion A process by which water, wind or ice wears away landform and carries the material to another place.
Atmosphere The multi-layered band of gases that surrounds the Earth. It makes life exist
Pangaea A single landmass that broke apart to form today's separate continents thought to have existed 200 millions years ago. A continent like Asia
Ring of Fire A circle of volcanic mountains that surrounds the Pacific ocean, including those islands of Japan, Indonesia, Cascades of North America and the Andes of South America
Why are there earthquakes and volcanoes? Laces in the Erath's crust crack from preassure, casuing earthquakes, or break apart, allowing liquid rock from beneath the surface to rise as volcanoes
