comparing 2 things using the word "like" or "as" simile - ex. the sun is like fire
using words in a way they are not meant literally idiom - ex. don't cry over spilled milk
a huge exaggeration to show meaning hyperbole - ex. my bookbag weighs a ton
a comparison that says one thing directly IS another thing;does not use "like" or "as" metaphor - ex. my dog is a rocket, shooting all over the house
giving a non-living thing human qualities personification - ex. my leg muscles screamed in agony
repeating the same consonant SOUND in multiple words to create an effect or draw attention alliteration - ex. The big brown bear banged his paw
words that are used to represent a sound onomatopoeia - ex. Tick tock tick tock, the hours crept by.
