vocabulary for basic types of figurative language

| a huge exaggeration to show meaning | hyperbole - ex. my bookbag weighs a ton |
| a comparison that says one thing directly IS another thing;does not use "like" or "as" | metaphor - ex. my dog is a rocket, shooting all over the house |
| giving a non-living thing human qualities | personification - ex. my leg muscles screamed in agony |
| repeating the same consonant SOUND in multiple words to create an effect or draw attention | alliteration - ex. The big brown bear banged his paw |
| words that are used to represent a sound | onomatopoeia - ex. Tick tock tick tock, the hours crept by. |
