Basic Literary Terms

TermDefinition
Protagonist The main character in the novel
Antagonist Opposing force (person, place,thing or idea)
Situational Irony The difference between what you expect to happen and what actually happened
Variable Irony Saying the "of what" is supposed to happen
Dramatic Irony Irony that is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play
Direct characterization Author directly states what a character is like
Indirect characterization Author uses dialogue, action, thoughts and reactions of other characters
First Person Point of View Narrator tells the story and uses "I"
Second Person Point of View Speaks to the reader using "you"
Third Person Point of View Person outside the story knows the thoughts of more than one character
Third person limited ominiscent Person outside story tells it and knows the thoughts of one character
