Basic Literary Terms

| Term | Definition |

| Protagonist | The main character in the novel |
| Antagonist | Opposing force (person, place,thing or idea) |
| Situational Irony | The difference between what you expect to happen and what actually happened |
| Variable Irony | Saying the "of what" is supposed to happen |
| Dramatic Irony | Irony that is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play |
| Direct characterization | Author directly states what a character is like |
| Indirect characterization | Author uses dialogue, action, thoughts and reactions of other characters |
| First Person Point of View | Narrator tells the story and uses "I" |
| Second Person Point of View | Speaks to the reader using "you" |
| Third Person Point of View | Person outside the story knows the thoughts of more than one character |
| Third person limited ominiscent | Person outside story tells it and knows the thoughts of one character |
