What destroyed the city? An atomic bomb
What does the silhouette on the side of the house represent? What the people were doing when the bomb hit.
Who was depicted in the silhouette? A Man, woman, and child with a ball. Burned into the paint
What was still alive after the bomb? The dog
What does the house read to Mrs. McClellan? A poem
What finally destroys the house? Fire
"The house shuttered" is an example of what? Personification
The story is told from what point of view? Third Person
What continues to work in the house after the bomb? Technology
Was the bombing an expected event? No
"The house protects itself" is an example of what? Personification
"The house was paranoid about an attack" is an example of what? Personification
What is evidence that the attack occurred a few weeks ago? The dog survived and although covered in sores came into the house from outside.
What causes the house to go on fire? The tree falling into the house.
What does the house try to do once on fire? Tried to stop the fire but was unsuccessful. Water supply was low.

What happens at the end of the story? The voice of the house dies. There is smoke and silence and only one wall remains standing.
How did the family live prior to the bomb? They lived a very rich life style.
How do you know the type of life style they led? By all the technology in the house (i.e.: fully automated breakfast maker, voice that speaks to people in house, calendar of reminders each day, cleaning robot, voice controlled door)
What is the theme? Technology is harmful to man but nature will always beat technology Man is utterly destroyed because of a war, nature will go on without man, as if nothing had happened.
