| Compare and Contrast | Provides similarities and differences between two different subjects. |
| Sequence | Another term for chronological order. |
| Cause and Effect | Something happens as a result of an action |
| Problem and Solution | Tells what the problem is and how it is able to be corrected. |
| Description | Details of explanation, includes characteristics, attributes, facts, and or details about a specific topic. |
| Main Idea | One sentence telling the main point. |
| Author's Purpose | The reason the author wrote the text. |
| Inform | To give facts. |
| Persuade | To change one's opinion. |
| Entertain | To tell a story or to make laugh. |
| Signal Words | Word clues that tell the read the way the passage is organized, the text structure. |
| Signal Words- Cause/Effect | Because, As a result of, Therefore, If...Then, Due to, Consequently |
| Signal Words- Chronological Order | First, Next, During, Finally |
| Signal Words- Compare/Contrast | Similarly, on the other hand, yet, however, in comparison |
