Use of Metals

Making use of metals

TermDefinition
Making use of metals properties dictate uses
Alumnium electricity cables, CDs & DVDs, cooking foil and food cartons, drinking cans (due to shiny surface, good conductor of heat & electricity), non-toxic, resistant to corrosion, light, malleable)
Copper electrical wiring, roofing, saucepan bases (due to malleability, conducts heat & electricity well, malleable, unreactive
Lead holding stained glass windows, car batteries (due to unreactivity, easy to bend at rtp, creates current when dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid as lead (ii) oxide)
Zinc sacrificial protection and galvanization, torch batteries (due to resistant to corrosion, gives current when connected to carbon electrode)
Silver jewellry, mirrors, electrical connections (due to good conductivity of electricity, shiny, resists corrosion)
Titanium tooth implants, exhaust pipes for planes, pipes and tanks (due to lightness, strength, resistant to corrosion, non-toxic, malleable and ductile)
