| personification | non-human things given human qualities |
| repetition | repeated phrases or words for emotional effect |
| meter | the basic rhythmic structure in verse, composed of stressed and unstressed syllables. |
| rhyme scheme | - the pattern of rhyming lines (e.g. ABAB, ABBA) |
| idiom | an expression that has a different meaning form the literal meaning of its individual words (e.g. have the upper hand, or under the weather). Idioms are particular to a given language and usually cannot be translated literally. |
| hyperbole | an intentional and extreme exaggeration for emphasis or effect (e.g. this book weighs a ton) |
| graphic elements | capital letters, line length, and word position; also called the “shape” of a poem. |
| alliteration | repetition of same first letter |
| onomatopoeia | words that make the sound |
| simile | compares to unlike things without using like or as |
| metaphor | compares to unlike things without like or as |
| allusion | when a literary work makes a reference to things founds in mythology, Bible, history. |
