Where was Mesopotamia? What is there today? Describe the geography/ climate. It is now where Iraq is today. The climate for Mesopotamia is a desert which is very hot and dry. Sumerians cities were isolated by geography and with walls for safety.
Why was it named "Mesopotamia?" Because it was the first known civilization and also because meso= between and potami= river.
Describe the flooding in this area. What was the benefit of the flood? What problems did they cause? The flooding was unpredictable, it took place in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It was beneficial because it created good farming and rich fertile soil called slit.
What is "rule of law?" the idea that the rules apply equally to everyone
Who was Hammurabi? What is he known for? What was so special about his laws? Hammurabi was a king of Babylon. Hammurabi created the Babylonian Empire. He is known for collected the best laws from each city-state and combined them to make the first written legal code/aka Code of Hammurabi- laws special b/c earliest written laws
The Epic of Gilgamesh- what is significant (special/unique) about it? What is the story of the Great Flood similar to? is a long poem about a sumerian king- world's oldest known ex of literature. The sumerian story of the Great Flood is similar to the story of Noah in the Bible.
The Assyrian Empire- what were its strengths? Why did it fall? Was the first army to use iron weapons, had war fair, and organized government- they fell because it was overpowered by the Chaldean Empire and also cause their empire was too big
Describe the religious beliefs of the ancient Mesopotamians. Their religious beliefs were called sumer- it was an isolated religion. Also the mesopotamia believed in polytheistic, gods had to do with everything, king's power came from gods, had to feed, protect, and worship, please gods.
Ziggurat were sumerian temples that dominated city-state. They were built to please the gods. Their powerful priests controlled most of the land or a rectangle tower, or temple- in ancient Mesopotamia
Based on the religious beliefs of the ancient Mesopotamians, how would someone most effectively have a king removed from power? They would of removed a King if he was a horrible leader- if king made gods upset or sad
Writing- what was it called? Who wrote? (scribes, gender) cuneiform; scribe- a male writer- why? women didn't have rights or didn't learn back then ex. sumerians, egyptians, teachers and students, scribes, merchants, farmers, rulers for legal system
Nebuchadnezzar- What did he rule? What is he remembered for building? he ruled Chaldean Empire; he is remembered for building the hanging gardens, rebuilt the city of Babylon and made his capital the world's richest and largest city at that time.
Describe the flooding in this area. What was the benefit of the flood? What problems did they cause? 2nd option The flood was beneficial in that it created good farming conditions. The unpredictable nature, however, meant that they had to find ways to protect the people and buildings….credited the gods with both good and bad flooding.
Who wrote? Sumerians, egyptians, teachers and students, scribes, merchants, farmers, ruler- legal system
How did they write? Sumerians wrote on clay tablets. Used symbols and hyroglifics
Why did they write? write laws, record crops, priest offerings, taxes
When did the historical Gilgamesh live? about 2700BCE
What caused Gilgamesh and Enkidu to become friends? the two were evenly matched in battle, which caused them to respect each other
Which statement summarizes what Gilgamesh learned about mortality? All living things must eventually die.
