APUSH Chpter 4 Vocab

TermDefinition
William Berkely Colonial governor of Virginia, and a Lord Proprietor of the Colony of Carolina. Appointed to these points by King Charles of England.
Nathaniel Bacon Colonist of the Virginia Colony, and famous instigator of the Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. Died of Dysentery during the rebellion.
Bacon's Rebellion Armed rebellion led by Nathaniel Bacon against William Berkely. It was largely fought over worries of safety from native Americans.
Leisler's Rebellion An uprising in New York, in which Jacob Leisler seized control of the colonies southern area, and rule for 3 years. It was put down then after and Leisler was executed.
Half-Way Covenant A form of partial church membership created in New England. It was a state in which the member had not proved their piety with a conversion experience, and they could not have their children baptized while in this state.
Blue Blood A word for the nobility used in the New English colonies.
Hinterland The often uncharted areas beyond a coastal district or a river's banks.
Social Structure The patterned social arrangements in society that are emergent and determinant of the actions of the individuals.
Lynching An act of vigilante justice used as a punishment by an informal group. Usually used to characterize execution by a mob, usually by hanging.
Jeremiad New type of sermon from Puritan preachers. Focused on the teachings of Jeremiah, a prophet in the bible who preached impending doom.
Corporation A group given legal rights to act on certain specified actions under the law.
Hierarchy A system or organization of people by class, status or authority.
Militia A military force that is raised from the civil population to act as a regular army in emergency, such as those raised by revolutionaries against the British in New England.
Menial Lowly. Humble. Simple and without needing skill.
Fertility The quality of being fit for childbirth, or able to sire children.
Middle Passage A portion of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in which the slaves are brought from Africa to the america's. Usually had an extremely high death rate on the trip.
Tidewater A portion of water affected by the tides. EX: the coast, or on coastal rivers.
Civil War Conflict between two sides of the same country.
Disfranchise Taking away the right of someone to vote.
Headright Right to a certain amount of land. Granted to someone who finances the passage of a laborer.
Slave Codes The laws dictating the sale and treatment of slaves and their masters.
Indentured Servitude Those who bought passage to the New World and sometimes some other form of compensation such as a small piece of land, food or clothing, by working on farms and plantations in New England.
