Properties of Equality

Addition Property of Equality You can add the same number to both sides of an equation, and the statement will be true.

Subtraction Property of Equality You can subtract the same number from both sides of the equation, and the statement will be true.
Subtraction Property of Equality x + 7 = 14 -7 -7 ____________ x = 7
Multiplication Property of Equality x/6 = 3 6 * x/6 = 3 * 6 x = 18
Multiplication Property of Equality you can multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, and the statement will still be true.
Division Property of Equality You can divide both sides of an equation by the same nonzero number, and the statement will be true
Division Property of Equality 6x = 36 6x/6 = 36/6 x = 6
Additive inverse The opposite of a number. Two numbers are additive inverses if their sum is zero.

associative property of addition For all numbers a,b, and c (a+b) +c = a + (b + c)
associative property of multiplication For all numbers a, b and c. (a x b) x c = a x (b x c)
