Reference materials

TermDefinition
dictionary A book containing an alphabetical list of words and their meanings.
glossary A dictionary in the back of the book that gives definitions of words found in a book.
thesaurus A book in which words that have the same or similar meanings are grouped together.
encyclopedia Books organized alphabetically containing information on many subjects.
index An alphabetical list in a book that gives with each item listed the page number where it may be found, usually in the back of the book.
table of contents A list of the parts of a book organized in the order in which the parts appear, usually in the front of the book.
timeline A table listing important events for successive years within a particular historical period.
newspapers Current event publications, usually issued daily.
magazine A publication containing focused on a specific topic or interest and issued at regular intervals (as weekly or monthly).
almanac An annual publication containing statistics, data, and general information.
atlas A book of maps.
Internet A place to access information using a computer and the World Wide Web.
telephone directory A book or directory, containing an alphabetical list of telephone subscribers in a city or other area, together with their addresses and telephone numbers.
primary source documents Original materials that have not been altered or distorted in any way.
Guinness World Records A book that records unique achievements.
