-Living skin around the nail plate splits and tears -Caused by dry skin or small cuts -Treatment: Carefully trim -If infected (red, painful, swollen, pus) do not touch and refer to physician HANGNAIL/AGNAIL
(White spots) Whitish discolorations of the nails -Caused by minor injury to matrix -Treatment: as nail grows, eventually will disappear LEUKONYCHIA SPOTS
Darkening of fingernails or toenails/black band w/in the nail plate extending from base to free edge/Caused by localized area of increased pigment cells (melanocytes) within the matrix.normal in people with darker pigmented skin, but NOT in Caucasians MELANONYCHIA
Nails that turn a variety of colors -Caused by surface stains from nail polish, foods, smoking, systemic disorder or poor blood circulation -Treatment: polish over stain to camouflage DISCOLORED NAILS
Habit of chewing the nail or hardened, damaged skin surrounding the nail plate -Caused by nail biting (remember CHOP=Mouth=Bite) -Treatment: nail enhancements sometimes work, do not treat if skin is broken or infected ONYCHOPHAGY
Split/brittle nails/have lengthwise ridges gives rough apprnce to nailplate. Cause by injury to MATRIX,too much use cuticle removers, aggressive filing/heredity,lack of Sufficient moisture STOP use of harsh cleaning agents,2X Day oil. don't use hardners ONYCHORRHEXIS
Highly curved nail plate -Caused by injury to matrix/leads to ingrown nails -Treatment: round edges of nail to keep from penetrating into the skin PLICATURED (FOLDED) NAILS
Skin stretched by the nail plate Cause by serious injury, like burns or adverse skin reactions to chemical nail enhancments/ damage to hyponichium/eponychium. do gentle massage w/ cond. oils/creams/dont push back extension of skin with an instrument NAIL PTERYGIUM
Vertical lines running down length of natural nail plate/cause by uneven growth of nails,usually result of normal aging,carefully buff nail plate to minimize ridges, ridge filler less damaging and can be used withcolor polish to givesmooth appearance RIDGES
Oxidized blood from the bed epithelium that give appearance of splinters on a nail plate; always grow lengthwise -Caused by physical trauma or injury to the nail bed that damages capillaries -Treatment: will grow out with nail plate SPLINTER HEMORRHAGES
Free edge pinches the sidewalls into a deep curve -Caused by curvature of the matrix; greater curvature=greater curvature of nail plate/mild to severe pinching of the soft tissue at the free edge Treatment: careful trimming and filing PINCER (TRUMPET) NAIL
