| conflict | the problem in the story |
| antagonist | the person who is against the protagonist |
| mood | the feeling of the reader |
| point of view | perspective from which a story is told |
| simile | comparing two different things using like or as |
| personification | an object, idea, or animal that has human characteristics |
| idiom | an expression that cannot be understood from the meanings of its individual words. |
| setting | the place, time, and environment which the story takes place. |
| imagery | language that portrays sensory experiences, or experiences of the five senses |
| flashback | a scene in the story that took place before the present time of the story. |
| tone | the author's attitude toward the subject matter or toward the reader or audience |
| characterization | the methods used by an author to create a character |
| humor | mood; state of mind |
| suspense | the state of suspense |
| foreshadowing | clues and hints about what will happen later on in the story |
| allusion | an indirect or casual reference |
| dynamic character | a character who undergoes a significant internal change over the course of the story |
| figurative language | the literal meaning of a word is its definition. |
| irony | when a reader or audience member is aware of something the character is not aware of. |
| static character | a character who doesn't not undergo a significant change over the course of the story. |
| symbol | an object, setting, animal, event, or person that's on one level is itself, but that has another meaning as well. |
| oxymoron | a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction |
| voice | an author or narrator's distinctive style or manner of expression. |
| motif | a distinctive figure or dominant idea in an artistic or literary composition |
| sarcasm | the use of irony to mock or convey contempt |
| connotation | an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning. |
| denotation | the literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast |
| diction | as style of speaking or writing determined by choice of words by speaker or a writer. |
| hyperbole | exaggerated statement or claim that isn't supposed to be taken literally. |
| repetition | repetition is a literary device that repeats the same words or phrases. |
