| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Mass | A measurement of the amount of matter in an object. |
| Weight | The effect of Earth's gravitational pull on an object. |
| Scientific Method | The systematic approach to answering a question or studying a situation. |
| Qualitative Data | Information described with the sense; examples include smell, color, texture, or shape. |
| Quantitative Data | Numerical information; examples include mass, size, or speed. |
| Hypothesis | A possible explanation for an observation. |
| Experiment | A set of controlled observations meant to test a hypothesis. |
| Independent Variable | The variable that is knowingly changed in an experiment. |
| Dependent Variable | The variable that changes depending on the independent variable. The variable you are measuring. |
| Control Variable | The constant variable used for comparison. |
| Conclusion | A judgement based on data obtained in an experiment. |
| Model | An explanation for a studied phenomenon. |
| Theory | An explanation supported by many experiments. |
| Scientific Law | Describes a relationship in nature that is supported by many experiments for which no exception has been found. |
| Base Unit | A unit of measurement based on an object or event in the physical world. |
