Changing Existing Hair Color

Color enhancing shampoos and conditioners used to maintain existing color, add tone to hair
Semi-permanent colors Deposits color, cannot lighten, coats hair strand
Line of demaracation an obvious difference between 2 colors along a strand
Oxidative colors Deposits color, lightens in a single process technique
Long lasting semi-permanent colors uses low volume hydrogen peroxide to develop the color molecules and aid in color processing. Adds tone to the hair.
Permanent hair colors Mixed with hydrogen peroxide and capable of both lightening natural pigment and depositing artificial pigment in a single process
Toners Identifies the warmth or coolness of a color, name of a color or hue
Fillers Product that provides an even base color by filling in porous, damaged or abused areas with materials such as protein, equalizes the porosity of hair, deposits a base color in one applications
Lighteners Product used to decolorize, remove or diffuse pigment, utilizes ingredients such as ammonia and peroxide.

Double process 2 steps hair color process that involves lighten the hair first then adding color
Technique
On the scalp lighteners color product used to lighten the hair, when applied to the hair can touch the scalp without harm, available as oil or cream
Off the scalp lighteners Strong lightener that lightens the hair quickly and is not intended to touch the scalp available in powder form
Developers Referred as a catalyst or conductor needs to be mixed with ammonia or other alkaline compound to become active, oxidizing agent used with demi permanent and permanent color, lighteners and toners, hydrogen peroxide
Vegetable dyes Natural product used to color the hair, henna that produces reddish highlights in the hair, unreliability
henna Most common vegetable dye, natural color product that produces reddish highlights in the hair
metallic dyes Hair dye containing metals known as progressive dye with the hair turning darker with each application
Compound dyes Conbination of metallic and vegetable dye, metallic salts added to a vegetable dye to create a wider range of colors
Zonal Patterns Adding texture or color in certain areas or zones of the head versus the entire head such as: Fringe, crown, perimeter
Base to ends application Hair color application technique used to add tone or darken existing color along the entire strand, known as virgin darker techniqe
Midstrand to ends then base application Used to lighten existing color by applying the new color or lightener to the midstrand 1/2" away from the scalp then up to but not including porous ends

Dimensional coloring Involves the positioning of highlights and or lowlights on the surface of the hair to select strands in create special effects
Highlighting Lightening of isolated strands of hair with a lightener
Lowlighting Darkening isolated strands of hair with color
Weaving technique Process of using a tail comb to weave out selected strands of hair in an alternating pattern for the application of hair color, hair is positioned over foil or thermal strip then lightener or color is applied
Slicing technique Section of hair is positioned over a piece of foil or thermal strip and lightener or color is applied
Freeform painting Technique in which a brush is used position color or lightener on the surface of the hair
End lights Process achieved by lightening only the ends of the hair
Cap method Hair coloring technique in which selected hair strands are pulled through perforated holes in a rubber coloring cap using a crochet hook
Predisposition test Done 24 hours prior to a permanent hair color service to determine if a client is sensitive or allergic to aniline derivative ingredients or certain chemicals in hair color, skin patch test
Preliminary strand test Process to determine proper color formulation performed 24 to 48 hours before a color service
Color removers Products used to remove unwanted artificial pigment from the hair
